Scam or no scam? Back to top

What do I need to look out for?

There are several ways to spot a scam. Most of which we'll mention here. We obviously can not think of, or cover all of the scams that these fraudsters come up with lately, but please use common sense and be wary of any ads that look suspicious. Also keep in mind, that these fraudsters can also read this section, and devise clever workarounds and other mechanisms of tricking you out of your hard earned cash.

  • If the telephone number provided does not work or divert to voice mail, no matter what time you phone them.
  • If they can not provide a land line number or SA Banking details.
  • If they have any excuses in terms of you viewing the car before you part with your money.
  • If possible, try and make time to meet the seller first.
  • Don't be lured into a deal after being told that there is a customer protection plan or guarantee behind this transaction. There isn't.
  • Meet the people in open friendly environments. Have friends or family go with you when meeting the seller, or viewing the vehicle.
  • Don't take the money with you when viewing the vehicle or meeting the seller.
  • If the seller only corresponds through e-mail and has excuses when you try to call them. Saying either that they have an illness, got divorced recently or moved abroad.
  • If the seller asks you to deposit large amounts, or even the full price of the vehicle and then giving excuses as to why they haven't received the money yet and asks for more money to be deposited.
  • If vehicles are popular and sold way under market value, it most probably is a scam.
  • Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, no puntuation and fast replies (often automated) could indicate thet you're dealing with a fraudster.
  • Also keep an eye on the hours that they respond to your email.

What can I do if I think I'm involved in a scam.

Feel free to , by mail or phone, or phone the police or send a text to Crime Line on '32211'.
